Afghanistan - Scattered but Not Lost

Updated: Jul 20, 2022

“But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise. And God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty;”
1 Corinthians 1:27

I had a very interesting thought the other evening. As I sat on my front porch, I looked across my yard to see just in the corner of my yard a cluster of dandelions. As I watched their little, fuzzy heads bouncing in the breeze, I could remember as a kid how I loved blowing away the seeds of the dandelions just to watch the little helicopters hang in the air for a moment just before the breeze snatched them up and carried them away. As I reminisced, another thought flickered across my mind, “Isn’t that just like the church?”

Let me elaborate on what I mean by explaining the situation of the Church in Afghanistan. Before 2021, the number of Christians in Afghanistan ranged around 80,000 and that number was growing. However, this growth was abruptly stopped in August 2021 when the Taliban took over and immediate action was taken to blow away the budding Church in Afghanistan. As thousands fled the country it would have seemed that the enemy had won, the Church was gone. However, quite the opposite happened. God never ceases to amaze me in how He loves to use the foolish things of this world to confound the wise. Even though many Christians fled the country to escape Taliban persecution, those who scattered and fled Afghanistan still continued their house church ministries which included radio broadcasting. Because of this, the Gospel was still reaching those in Afghanistan and people were still getting saved.

This is a common theme that is echoed time and time again in Scripture -- Persecution grows the church. Though the “wise” may view the church as being a frail dandelion that can be blown away, God sees this as an opportunity to scatter seed. Though the breath of the enemy may dislodge these believers from their homes, it’s God’s sovereignty that carries them to where they are supposed to be.

The church is not finished because He is not finished.
