A Joyful Walk

A 3-Day Devotional Based on Pastor Bill's message, August 3, 2026

DAY 1

READ: 1 Thessalonians 4:1–2; 1 Thessalonians 1:6–7

"Finally then, brethren, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and please God (just as you actually do walk), that you excel still more. For you know what commandments we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus... You also became imitators of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much tribulation with the joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia."

DEVO: It is remarkably easy to absorb the cultural assumption that peace and happiness are strictly tied to smooth circumstances. When the days go smoothly, our spiritual steps feel light, but when unexpected disruptions arrive, our joy often vanishes instantly. Yet, when Paul wrote to the believers in Thessalonica, he noted something extraordinary: they had received the truth amid deep tribulation, yet walked with a vibrant joy produced directly by the Holy Spirit. Their circumstances were far from ideal, yet their lives radiated an authentic faith that set an example for everyone around them.

Walking in a way that pleases God does not require a life free of friction. Instead, it begins with recognizing that our past has been completely cleared through faith. Real relief comes when we stop attempting to earn acceptance through self-effort and instead rest fully in the forgiveness already provided for us. When you know that every past regret and failure is totally forgiven, the heavy weight of guilt falls away, freeing you to move forward with a light heart regardless of what today brings.

Take time today to slow down and consider how much energy you spend worrying about past mistakes or striving to prove your worth. True joy begins the moment simple trust replaces quiet unbelief. When your foundation is built on complete forgiveness, your daily walk shifts from a grueling task into a steady, grateful response to profound grace.

APPLICATION: What past failure or ongoing regret are you still carrying that you need to fully surrender to God's complete forgiveness today?

DAY 2

READ: Matthew 4:4; Acts 1:8; Romans 8:26

"But He answered and said, 'It is written, "Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God."' ... 'but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.' ... In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words."

DEVO: Many believers attempt to navigate their daily responsibilities, relationships, and challenges using nothing more than human willpower. We wake up, analyze the tasks ahead, and try our absolute best to hold everything together. Predictably, this approach leads directly to exhaustion and frustration. Living a life that honors God was never meant to be sustained by our limited human energy; it is meant to be continuously supplied by present divine power.

God provides this daily strength through three vital means: the dwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, the living truth of His Word, and the intentional encouragement of Christian community. The Holy Spirit acts as an abiding helper who actively intercedes for us even when we lack the words to express our weakness. Meanwhile, Scripture feeds our inner spirit much like food nourishes the physical body. When we couple this truth with the strength found in walking alongside fellow believers, we are no longer left striving in isolation.

Reflect on where you have been relying on your own strength lately. Tapping into present power requires an intentional decision to stop striving alone and start leaning into the Spirit's daily guidance. When you feed on truth and lean on divine power, even ordinary or difficult days become opportunities to experience supernatural help.

APPLICATION: In what specific area of your life this week do you need to stop relying on self-sufficiency and actively lean on the Holy Spirit's power?

DAY 3

READ: 1 Thessalonians 4:16–18; Philippians 3:20–21

"For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words... For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself."

DEVO: When our focus remains entirely fixed on immediate, physical realities, it is easy to become discouraged by the gradual wear and tear of life. Physical bodies age and fail, earthly plans frequently stall, and the heart grows weary from suffering and loss. However, a faith-filled walk maintains a long-term perspective, fully aware that present hardships are merely a temporary chapter in a much larger, glorious story.

Our ultimate future is exceptionally bright because it is anchored in the promise of complete restoration. Scripture promises that our citizenship is in heaven and that Christ will one day transform our fragile, temporary existence into an eternal reality like His own. This prospective hope is not wishful thinking or simple optimism; it is an unshakeable guarantee that shapes how we respond to present trouble. Because our final outcome is secure, we can face daily trials with courage and steady endurance.

Consider how an eternal perspective changes your current worries. When you remember that every trial has an expiration date and that your future with God is completely secure, present struggles lose their power to dismantle your inner peace. Live today with your eyes set on that bright horizon, allowing hope to define your daily walk.

APPLICATION: How can keeping your ultimate future in mind help you navigate a current trial with greater peace and patience today?
