Don't Get in the Lake
A 3-Day Devotional Based on Pastor Bill's Message, August 10, 2026
DAY 1
READ: 1 Thessalonians 4:1-3
"Finally, then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you receive from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality..."
DEVO: When we step into a relationship with Jesus, we enter into a whole new way of walking through the world. Salvation isn't simply a ticket to heaven; it is an invitation to daily transformation. God’s earnest desire for every single one of us is our sanctification—the continuous process of being set apart from the toxic patterns of our surrounding culture so that we can grow to look more like Jesus. God’s directives for our lives are not restrictive demands designed to rob us of joy. Instead, they function as loving guardrails that protect us from stepping into spiritual danger.
Living a life that pleases God requires an active, intentional cooperation with the Holy Spirit. It means looking at the progress we have already made in our faith journey and asking God to help us press forward even further. When we align our daily habits, thoughts, and boundaries with His Word, we begin to experience the incredible peace and clarity that comes from walking directly in the center of His will. God doesn't call us to holiness to keep us from enjoying life, but to ensure we experience the richest, purest life possible in Him.
APPLICATION: What is one practical boundary you can establish or reinforce this week to protect your heart and walk more closely with God?
DAY 2
READ: 1 Thessalonians 4:4-8
"...that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man, but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you."
DEVO: Self-control in a world that constantly encourages self-indulgence is one of the clearest signs of a heart yield to Christ. God calls us to honor Him with our physical bodies and to guard our minds against destructive desires that mirror a culture detached from God. Our personal choices are never made in isolation; when we yield to compromise, the impact always leaks into our relationships, hurting those around us and violating the trust of our spiritual family. Recognizing the broader relational fallout of sin gives us a powerful perspective to resist temporary temptations.
Thankfully, we are never asked to maintain moral purity in our own weak human strength. God has placed His Holy Spirit directly within us to serve as our teacher, helper, and guide. When we pay attention to the Spirit's quiet prompts and gentle convictions, we are given the strength to turn away from harmful influences before they take root. Embracing holiness is ultimately an act of honoring the God who loved us enough to inhabit our lives and empower us for good.
APPLICATION: How can you pay closer attention to the quiet prompts of the Holy Spirit when faced with daily choices and distractions?
DAY 3
READ: 1 John 1:7-9, Ephesians 4:30
"But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness... And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."
DEVO: No matter how dedicated we are to walking in God’s ways, every believer encounters moments of weakness and spiritual missteps. The enemy often uses those moments of failure to convince us that we are permanently ruined or beyond help. However, the gospel offers us a far better path: immediate restoration through the open arms of Jesus. God’s invitation is never to hide our guilt or remain stuck in polluted patterns, but to bring our shortcomings into His bright light.
When we bring our missteps before God in honest confession, He guarantees complete forgiveness and thorough cleansing. His grace acts as a refreshing stream that washes away our unrighteousness and restores our intimate walk with Him. Rather than allowing shame to drive us away from God or cause us to grieve His Spirit, we can run straight to our High Priest. In His grace, we find not only mercy for our past, but renewed strength to step forward into the beauty of His holiness once again.
