Living a Life that Pleases God
A 3-Day Devotional Based on Pastor Bill's message, 08/16/2026
DAY 1
READ: 1 Thessalonians 4:1–8
"Finally, then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that just as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man, but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you."
DEVO: When we enter into a relationship with Christ, our salvation is secured by grace, but our daily journey has only just begun. God’s desire for every believer is sanctification—the ongoing, life-long process of being set apart and transformed into the image of Jesus. Walking in a way that pleases God is not about earning His favor through self-righteous effort, but about cooperating with the Holy Spirit as He aligns our hearts, habits, and desires with His truth. Sanctification touches every area of our lives, requiring us to actively reject the world’s standards of morality and embrace the honorable, holy living to which God has called us.
Choosing holiness means recognizing where the surrounding culture attempts to influence our desires and setting clear, intentional boundaries. Because we have been given the gift of the Holy Spirit, we are never left to fight spiritual battles or overcome temptation in our own human strength. The Spirit provides the power to say no to worldly passions and yes to a life of integrity, honor, and self-control. As we yield our daily choices to Him, we experience the profound peace and freedom that come from living squarely within the will of God.
APPLICATION: What is one specific boundary or habit you can put in place this week to better guard your heart and yield to the Holy Spirit’s work of sanctification?
DAY 2
READ: 1 Thessalonians 4:9–10
"Now concerning brotherly love you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another, for that indeed is what you are doing to all the brothers throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to do this more and more..."
DEVO: From the moment we are born into God’s family, the Holy Spirit begins instilling within us a genuine capacity and desire to love other believers. Loving one another is not merely a dynamic we learn from reading a manual; it is an organic result of receiving God's love and experiencing His grace firsthand. However, even when a community of faith is doing a wonderful job caring for one another, scripture encourages us never to become complacent or assume we have reached the limit of what love requires. There is always space to go deeper, give more generously, and care more intentionally.
Growing in brotherly love requires a willingness to lean into authentic relationship, even when life feels busy or demanding. True Christian community is forged when we choose to step into one another’s lives—sharing meals, carrying burdens, praying through hardships, and showing up during unexpected trials. As we actively look for ways to increase our love for those around us, our faith becomes a tangible, life-giving refuge, demonstrating the reality of Christ to everyone we encounter.
APPLICATION: Who in your circle or church community needs encouragement right now, and what practical step can you take today to love them "more and more"?
DAY 3
READ: 1 Thessalonians 4:11–12
"...and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one."
DEVO: In a world that constantly equates success with visibility, constant noise, and frantic activity, God offers a radically different vision for our daily ambitions. We are instructed to make it our goal to live a quiet, restful life—one that steps back from unnecessary excitement, avoids meddling in the affairs of others, and faithfully attends to the work set before us. A quiet life is not an idle or disengaged life; rather, it is a life deeply grounded in spiritual peace, protected from the overwhelming distractions of a chaotic culture.
When we focus on working diligently with our hands, caring for our responsibilities, and living contentedly within our God-given calling, our lives gain a compelling credibility. Outsiders take notice when a Christian carries themselves with steady peace, dependability, and self-contained grace. By choosing to step out of the frantic race for attention and stepping into a pattern of faithful, quiet service, we become a distinct witness to the peace and sufficiency of Jesus Christ.
APPLICATION: What is one area of noise or unnecessary distraction you can cut out this week in order to cultivate a quieter, more restful walk with God?
