The Living Trophies of Grace

Based on Pastor Bill 's sermon, May 17, 2026

The most powerful force in the world is not a persuasive argument or a charismatic presentation, but the living, breathing Word of God. When we encounter the Scriptures, we aren't just engaging with ancient literature; we are coming into contact with a divine power that reconstructs the human heart from the inside out. There is a distinct shift that occurs when a person stops hearing the Bible as the words of men and begins to receive it for what it truly is: a direct message from the Creator. This reception is the beginning of sanctification, a process where the Spirit of God takes the truth we have heard and makes it a reality in our Monday mornings and Tuesday afternoons. As the Apostle Paul noted to the Thessalonians, this Word is "at work in you believers," proving that the divine message does its most significant work when it is applied, not just admired. It turns a "sorry thing" into a new creation that starts to look like Jesus, reminding us that we do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.

Living out this faith rarely leads to a path of least resistance; in fact, the deeper our commitment to the truth, the more likely we are to face significant hindrances. We often mistake personal conflict or circumstantial setbacks as mere bad luck, but there is often a deeper spiritual reality at play. Just as the early followers of Christ faced intense pressure from their own countrymen, we may find that our decision to follow Jesus creates an immediate "uproar" in our environment. Yet, these trials serve to validate our journey rather than derail it, as we recognize that we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. When we realize that even the most difficult opposition is often a sign that we are on the path of duty, we can find the strength to move forward, understanding that the enemy only hinders those who are making an eternal impact.

Ultimately, the goal of our journey is not to reach heaven empty-handed, but to be surrounded by the people we have loved and led toward the Savior. There is a specific kind of glory and joy reserved for the day we stand before the Lord and realize that our "crown of boasting" is not a physical object, but the people whose lives were changed because we were obedient in sharing the Word. We were left on this earth to be witnesses, to invest in a love relationship with Christ that naturally overflows into the lives of others. As Scripture promises, those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars for ever and ever. When we finally see Him face to face, our greatest satisfaction will be looking at those standing beside us—the trophies of His grace—and realizing that they are our hope, our joy, and our eternal reward. This is why we persevere through every hindrance: because the Word of God is at work, and the results are eternal.
