Cheer Up!
A 3-Day Devotional Based on Pastor Bill's Message September 6th, 2026
DAY 1
READ: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14
"But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep."
DEVO: Grief is one of the heaviest burdens we carry in this life. When a loved one passes away, the silence they leave behind can feel overwhelming, threatening to swallow up our joy and peace. The world often views death as a final, dark boundary—an abrupt end that leaves nothing behind but empty memories. But as believers, we are invited to look at death through an entirely different lens. God does not want us to be uninformed or driven to despair, because our foundation rests on the undeniable reality of the resurrection of Jesus.
Notice that Scripture gently describes the death of a believer as falling asleep. When we lay our heads down at night, we do so with the full expectation of waking up to a new morning. In the same way, physical death for a Christian is simply a peaceful transition into the immediate presence of God, while awaiting the full restoration of all things. We still grieve, and our tears are genuine, but our sorrow is fundamentally infused with hope. We do not mourn like those who have no anchor; we mourn knowing that separation is only temporary.
Take a moment to reflect on where your heart runs when sorrow hits. Are you allowing the despair of the world to shape your view of loss, or are you anchoring your soul in the resurrection power of Christ? Knowing that your past is forgiven, your present is supplied with power, and your future is bright with eternal life changes everything about how you walk through loss. Let that truth quiet your anxieties and lift your head today.
APPLICATION: How can holding onto the promise of the resurrection change the way you navigate grief or support a friend who is currently walking through loss?
DAY 2
READ: 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17
"For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord."
DEVO: Life on this earth can often feel like an overwhelming series of trials, uncertainties, and struggles. It is easy to get so caught up in the immediate strain of daily life that we forget the grand story God is unfolding. Paul writes to remind us of a breathtaking reality: a day is coming when the Lord Himself will descend, and His people will be gathered together to meet Him. This is not a symbolic metaphor or a distant fantasy; it is the concrete, practical reality of our ultimate future.
Think about the sheer joy of that impending reunion. Those who have gone before us in faith are not lost to us forever. They will rise first, and together, the entire family of God will be caught up to meet Christ. The ultimate highlight of heaven is not just the magnificent surroundings or the relief from earthly pain, but the incredible promise that we will always be with the Lord. No separation, no distance, and no sin will ever dim that connection again.
Living with an active expectation of Christ’s return transforms how we spend our daily lives. It gives us perspective when earthly plans crumble or when world events feel chaotic. When we know how the story ends, we can stand firm in the present. Let the promise of this glorious gathering fill your heart with expectation and give you steady confidence as you face today's challenges.
APPLICATION: In what practical ways can keeping the return of Christ at the forefront of your mind give you peace and endurance amidst current daily stress?
DAY 3
READ: 1 Thessalonians 4:18, Titus 2:11-13
"Therefore encourage one another with these words." "For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ."
DEVO: Truth was never meant to be hoarded in isolation; it was given to be shared and lived out in community. After laying out the profound realities of the resurrection and the return of Christ, Paul ends with a simple command: encourage one another with these words. We live in a world filled with bad news, cynicism, and heavy heartaches. If we are not intentional, we can easily let the culture's despair seep into our conversations and mindset.
As followers of Jesus, we are called to be agents of comfort and hope to those around us. When a brother or sister in Christ is weary, grieving, or struggling to hold on, we have the privilege of pointing them back to our blessed hope. We can remind each other that our present light affliction is producing an eternal weight of glory, and that our King is coming to make all things new.
Spiritual encouragement is a powerful medicine against the fatigue of life. When we make a habit of reminding ourselves and others of God’s faithfulness and future promises, simple unbelief begins to melt away. Joy takes root, strength is renewed, and we find the courage to keep pressing forward. Look around you today and ask God to show you who needs a word of hope and comfort from His promises.
APPLICATION: Who in your circle of influence is currently walking through a difficult season, and how can you specifically encourage them with God's promises this week?
