A 3-Day Devotional Based on Pastor Bill's message, October 11, 2026

Day 1

Read: 1 Thessalonians 5:19–21 & Luke 5:37–38

"Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good." (1 Thessalonians 5:19–21)

"And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins." (Luke 5:37–38)

Devotional:

When we surrender our lives to Christ, the Holy Spirit takes up residence within us. He comes not merely to remain as a silent, inactive presence, but to ignite a living flame of transformation, holiness, and spiritual vitality. Yet scripture explicitly warns us: "Do not quench the Spirit." The imagery here is vivid and sobering. Just as a physical fire can be snuffed out by smothering it or pouring cold water over its coals, the vibrant, active work of God’s Spirit in our daily lives can be quieted through neglect, apathy, or deliberate resistance.

To experience the continuous, dynamic presence of God, our hearts must remain soft and adaptable—much like fresh wineskins ready to receive new wine. When our hearts become rigid, cynical, or set in settled routines, we risk resisting the very movement of God designed to refine and empower us. True spiritual growth requires a daily willingness to let God stretch our understanding, soften our attitudes, and reignite the holy fire He planted within us at salvation. As we invite the Holy Spirit to take full leadership of our thoughts, words, and choices, that internal fire begins to shine brightly through our character and daily lives.

Application:

In what practical area of your daily life have you noticed a tendency to quiet or resist the Holy Spirit’s prompting, and what specific step can you take today to invite His active leadership back into that area?

Day 2

Read: 2 Peter 1:19–21 & 2 Timothy 4:1–2

"And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit." (2 Peter 1:19–21)

"I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching." (2 Timothy 4:1–2)

Devotional:

God’s written Word is a steadfast, trustworthy anchor for the human soul. In a culture of shifting opinions and constant cultural evolution, Scripture stands as a divinely inspired lamp, illuminating our path and guiding our decisions with timeless truth. Peter reminds us that the biblical text was not crafted by human intellect or personal interpretation; rather, holy men spoke directly as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. To undervalue or ignore Scripture is to discard the very roadmap God provided for our spiritual security and maturity.

A thriving spiritual walk requires a deep, unshakeable respect for God's Word. When we consistently immerse ourselves in Scripture, allow it to correct our misconceptions, and submit our lives to its truth, we build a foundation that withstands life's storms. Scripture provides the objective truth by which we evaluate every thought, teaching, and experience. As we cherish and pay careful attention to God’s Word, it shines clearly into every dark corner of our daily circumstances, giving us divine wisdom and unshakeable direction.

Application:

How can you adjust your daily habits to give Scripture a more central, guiding voice in your everyday decision-making?

Day 3

Read: Ephesians 5:18–21 & Colossians 3:16–17

"And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ." (Ephesians 5:18–21)

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." (Colossians 3:16–17)

Devotional:

When the Holy Spirit fills a believer and the Word of God dwells richly within them, the outward results are strikingly harmonious. Scripture shows that both a Spirit-filled life and a Word-saturated life produce identical fruit: authentic worship, genuine gratitude, mutual encouragement, and Christlike humility in relationships. God never intended for believers to choose between spiritual vitality and biblical truth. True spiritual maturity occurs when the Holy Spirit and the Word of God work together in complete unity within our hearts.

Living at this intersection creates a steady, resilient spiritual life that naturally impacts those around us. Rather than relying on fleeting emotional highs or rigid, cold intellect, we experience a vibrant, steady spiritual vitality fueled by divine truth. As we daily seek fresh filling from the Holy Spirit and immerse our minds in Scripture, our speech becomes encouraging, our hearts grow genuinely thankful, and our conduct reflects the steady love and authority of Jesus Christ in every environment we enter.

Application:

What is one way you can actively express genuine gratitude and Christlike encouragement to someone in your family, workplace, or church community this week?
