Church Life… How to Function as a Great Community
A 3-Day Devotional Based on Pastor Bill's message, September 27, 2026
DAY 1
READ
1 Thessalonians 5:12–15
"We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the faint-hearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone."
DEVO A healthy spiritual community is built on mutual respect and active, personal care. When we look at the leaders God has placed in our lives to teach and guide us, we are invited to hold them in high regard—not because of titles or outward status, but because of their self-giving labor in God’s Word. Leadership in the church is a stewardship of feeding and tending God's flock, and when a congregation responds with love, honor, and peace, it creates a healthy environment where the gospel can flourish. Cultivating peace among ourselves requires intentional effort, releasing small grievances so that our collective energy remains focused on following Jesus together.
At the same time, discipling and caring for one another is a responsibility shared by every single believer, not just church leaders. Every gathering contains people at different stages in their journey—some are weary, some are struggling with weakness, and others may be marching out of step. God calls us to step into these spaces with wisdom and deep empathy. We are asked to gently nudge the unruly back onto the path, offer warm encouragement to those carrying heavy grief, and patiently hold up those who are spiritually or emotionally frail. True Christian maturity is demonstrated by our willingness to love difficult people and walk alongside them patiently as God works in their lives.
APPLICATION Who in your spiritual community might be faint-hearted or weak right now, and what specific action can you take this week to encourage or support them?
DAY 2
READ
Romans 12:17–21
"Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, 'Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.' To the contrary, 'if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.' Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."
DEVO One of the most transformative habits of the Christian life is choosing never to retaliate when we are wronged. In a world that constantly encourages us to fight back, demand our rights, or get even, Scripture presents a radically different path: entrust justice entirely to God. When we attempt to execute our own vengeance or harbor bitterness, we poison our own souls and break the unity of our fellowship. Leaving room for God’s righteousness frees our hearts from the burden of carrying grudges and allows us to live in freedom.
Living peaceably with others means actively seeking to do good, even when it is unearned or unreciprocated. Overcoming evil with good is not passive weakness; it is the active power of Christ at work through us. When we choose kindness over retaliation, we reflect the unconditional grace that God extended to us while we were still distant from Him. By consistently doing good to both our brothers and sisters in Christ and the broader world around us, we become a compelling witness of God's transforming love.
APPLICATION Is there a hurt or grievance you are currently holding onto, and how can you actively surrender the desire for payback to God today?
DAY 3
READ
1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 & John 10:27–29
"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."
"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand."
DEVO God’s will for our daily lives is surprisingly direct: rejoice always, pray continuously, and cultivate gratitude in every circumstance. This is not a call to forced optimism or gloomy religious obligation, but an invitation to live in perpetual connection with the Father. Praying without ceasing means moving through our day in an ongoing, conversational fellowship with God, bringing our thoughts, cares, and moments of gratitude directly to Him as they happen. When prayer becomes our ambient atmosphere, joy naturally follows.
Our ability to give thanks in all circumstances—even painful ones—is grounded in the absolute security we have in Christ. We do not give thanks for evil or suffering, but we can give thanks in the middle of it because we know who holds us. Jesus promises that those who belong to Him are held tightly in His hand and simultaneously secured in the Father's hand. Nothing in this life—no hardship, loss, or trial—can snatch us out of that divine grip. Because our ultimate outcome is eternally secure in Christ, we can live with deep joy and unwavering gratitude every single day.
APPLICATION How can you shift your daily routines today to remain in a continuous, flowing conversation with God through prayer?
